Dental Crowns – Mount Pleasant, SC

Make Damaged Teeth Beautiful Again

Teeth are strong—very strong. They are covered in a translucent coating called enamel, which is the hardest substance in the human body. Despite this, teeth are not indestructible. For instance, microscopic bacteria can lead to decay in an otherwise healthy tooth. Likewise, traumatic injury from an unexpected fall or blow to the face can crack or fracture a tooth. When either of these circumstances damages a tooth, dental restoration is necessary to preserve oral health and to save the smile. Sometimes, the best options for repairs are an all-porcelain dental crowns. Here at Smile Carolina Dental Group, Dr. Jeffrey Johnson uses EMAX all-porcelain dental crowns for our Mount Pleasant, SC dental patients to preserve and damaged teeth and restore normal function to their smiles. What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a covering that is placed over a tooth when that tooth has lost its form, strength, or stability. A tooth may become decayed to the point that a tooth-colored filling is not a sufficient repair. A deep crack may threaten to split a tooth, in which case extraction may become necessary. In both of these situations, an all-porcelain crown fully encapsulates the tooth, providing protection and renewed function.

What Is an EMAX Dental Crown?

Our dentists prefer to use EMAX crowns. It is constructed from a single block of lithium disilicate ceramic, which is a high-quality material that is strong, long-lasting, and opaque, which gives it natural color and translucency. This, plus the natural shape of the crown, makes an EMAX crown less noticeable in your smile regardless of which tooth it covers. In addition, there is not a metal alloy base on this crown, so you do not have to worry about a dark line along your gum tissue.

Depending on the condition and size of your tooth, our dentists may need to prepare the tooth before the crown can be placed. In this case, a minimal amount of tooth structure is removed, and the tooth is reshaped. Now, your new crown will fit comfortably between your other teeth.

Then, we will capture a three-dimensional model of your tooth using our digital impression system. Once the impression is created, our dental lab will use this to manufacture your customized EMAX crown. We will place a temporary crown over your tooth while your permanent one is being fabricated. Then, in two to three weeks when the EMAX crown is ready, you will return to our dental office where we will bond the crown to the tooth structure.

Dental Crown Frequently Asked Questions

Dental crowns are an excellent way to make damaged teeth beautiful again while restoring their function. For your convenience, we have gathered some common questions about this versatile restoration below. If you do not see the answers you are looking for, do not hesitate to call us. We will be happy to provide the information you need!

How Can I Tell If I Need a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns can be used to address a variety of issues. You may benefit from one if:

  • You have extensive tooth decay or a very large filling.
  • Your tooth is broken or fractured.
  • You are not pleased with the appearance of a tooth.
  • Your teeth are noticeably worn down or misshapen.
  • You have just had a root canal.

Will My Dental Crown Be Noticeable?

In the past, dental crowns were made of shiny metals or would show off a dark line at their base over time. Thankfully, those are no longer the norm! We are proud to restore a tooth’s appearance right alongside its function with the help of an EMAX, porcelain, or zirconia crown. Once in place, it should be practically indistinguishable from the rest of your smile!

Does Getting a Dental Crown Hurt?

To make enough room for your dental crown, we will sometimes need to slightly reshape your tooth. While this may sound daunting at first, you can rest assured that this step is quick and virtually painless. If we need to prepare your tooth, we will first numb the area to ensure your comfort the entire time. It is natural to feel some slight tooth sensitivity for a few days afterward, but it should be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and be short-lived.

Can a Crowned Tooth Get a Cavity?

Dental crowns are designed to protect vulnerable teeth from damage and decay. While they are not vulnerable to cavities, it is important that you continue to practice great oral hygiene. If plaque and bacteria are allowed to build up along the base of your dental crown, they may be able to slip under its edge and attack the tooth underneath, which is especially susceptible to infection and decay. Thankfully, keeping your dental crown clean is an easy task! Simply brush and floss it every day alongside the rest of your teeth to ensure it stays beautiful and healthy.

What Can I Do to Extend the Lifespan of My Dental Crown?

On average, dental crowns last about 15 years before needing to be replaced. However, bad habits may shorten their lifespan, while a few healthy choices could help them last for many more years. You can make the most of your dental crowns by:

  • Brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day and flossing daily.
  • Getting a routine dental checkup and cleaning every six months.
  • Wearing a custom-made nightguard if you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding).
  • Not chewing on hard objects like ice, pen caps, or your fingernails.
  • Not using your teeth as tools to open packages, containers, or bottles.
