Scaling & Root Planing – Mount Pleasant, SC
Professional Deep Cleanings for Gum Disease Sufferers
Gum disease, when caught early enough, can often be managed using a simple dental cleaning and more diligent oral hygiene at home. However, if the infection has become advanced, Dr. Jeffrey Johnson and our dental team may choose to perform a more direct treatment involving two separate procedures: scaling and root planing in our Mount Pleasant, SC dental office. These are two of the most effective procedures when it comes to eliminating gum disease, and they will also help lessen your chances of reinfection in the future. Call us today to learn more.

How Scaling & Root Planing Works

Scaling and root planing are sometimes collectively known as “deep cleaning” because they are used to clean deep periodontal pockets, which are spaces between your gums and teeth where bacteria tend to thrive. The length of the complete treatment will depend on your particular situation, but regardless, you will first receive local anesthesia to ensure you are completely comfortable the entire time.
Scaling will be used to gently clean away and break up plaque and calculus (hardened plaque) that has gathered both above and below your gum line. Then, root planing will be used to reshape and smooth out the roots of your teeth. This will make it much harder for plaque to gather on them in the future, which will help protect you from reinfection. Plus, this will make it much easier for the surrounding gums to heal and naturally reattach to your teeth.
Have Any Questions?

After your scaling and root planing treatment, we may choose to apply a topical antibiotic to the area to help you fight the infection even more. In the end, the goal is to give you a clean, healthy smile, and with these gum disease treatments, that is exactly what you will get.
